Canning – 3 Reasons Why You Cannot Afford Not To

“Canning is too expensive!” “Who has the time to can?” “Why should I can when I can run to the grocery store and buy it on sale?” I’ve heard these statements, and others, many times. While true that canning requires a degree of time and effort, it can be extremely rewarding. Also, canning does require an initial outlay of money for jars, lids, and produce. But, the benefits far outweigh the costs incurred. In fact, there are 3 reasons why you literally cannot afford not to can!

1.”You are what you eat”

Did you know that the majority of all illness and disease is directly linked to diet? As the saying goes, “you are what you eat.” Furthermore, much of the food we eat is laced with chemicals, heavy metals, toxins, and other cancer causing agents. These chemicals include: MSG (a preservative), aspartame (soft drink sweetener), and a whole host of coloring agents, dyes, and things which cannot even be pronounced! Studies have shown MSG to be found in 70% of all processed foods. MSG has been linked to obesity, diabetes, migraine headaches, autism, ADHD, and even Alzheimer’s! Also found in all processed foods is the toxic chemical, Aspartame. This chemical is used to improve the taste of processed foods and is suspected to be a factor in the onset of mental illness.

The studies above suggest the idea that artificial flavorings, sweeteners, artificial food colors, and chemicals may be a factor in the proliferation of mental illnesses across the world. Is the world really coming apart at the seams? You bet it’s working hard to keep everything balanced!

2.”It costs how much?”

The amount of money you need to spend is an important question to ask when thinking about whether or not to can. The short answer to this question varies depending on how much you eat and the type of foods you eat. Don’t buy food in a supermarket; make food at home. If you like to eat out, buy fresh local foods. If you want to buy organic, shop at a local farmers market. You’ll be amazed at how much money you can save by training yourself to can your own food, rather than buying it. And if you still want to buy it, try going to a farmer’s market. There’s often produce for free. Sometimes you will even get a discount. farmers don’t get all of the money they cost from the government.

3.”How can I afford to eat organic food?”

First you need to know that organic costs a lot more than regular grocery store products. Organic produce is expensive because the labor cost is higher, and the transportation costs are higher. You may be wondering how you can afford to eat organic foods. The answer is simple. Get into organic friendly businesses. This is where you can get the best deals. I found that going to my local farmers market, and talking with her about how she raised her produce, was the best way to save money. You might be surprised by getting a discount as well for buying from her.

Killing two birds with one stone, getting into organic friendly businesses, and helping the environment – there are so many great reasons to buy organic, and you may never know when you’ll need to do this.

And there are even more reasons to enjoy eating organic foods. They are:

Organic foods are far healthier than regular non-organic products – studies have been done on the supposedly organic foods and they have shown that they are often tomato-choked, cockroached, genetically modified, and saturated with dangerous pesticides and herbicides.

Other foods are often slammed as well. Do you know that the supposedly organic foods you eat and use in your home are most often, MSG-loaded, highly processed, and contain hydrochloric acid which is deadly in high concentrations? Some research shows that the symptoms of MSG might include heart problems, ADHD, and even cancer.

Perhaps you’ve already seen the commercials with likable chefs and washed up celebrities warning others to stay away from artificial MSG. As though this was a bad thing, a Monsieur de la resie confesses to you:

“They are making things worse by the pound. Our bodies are need to thrive on real food, not fake food.”

The solution is simple. Buy organic produce. It’s not complicated. In fact, you can find some of the organic produce in a specialized section of your supermarket. Take the time to read the labels though. You don’t want to have to worry about artificial ingredients getting into your body. Rather, you want to buy foods that are at least 95% organic.

It’s going to cost you more, however.
