One of the first reactions I had to the news of the Royal College of Physicians’ recommendation that the Food and Drug Administration regulate all the websites of the pharmaceutical industry was to wonder if they would have done it differently. After all, the FDA itself is the one that makes the decisions on who uses the drugs in question. But the more I thought about it, the more I wished it could be regulated. After all, how could we create a universal standard if we’re going to rubberstamp the work of the drug companies themselves? It just didn’t seem right to do it this way. But then I found out that it wasn’t right to do it this way at all. It was remarkably consistent with how the EU handled each of the drugs in question, and with how USFDA responded to the more serious problems in the EU. In short, it seemed like USFDA was happy to turn a blind eye to the problems of foreign manufacturers and only focused on American consumers.
But what’s really interesting about this story is what it says about the internet. Quite frankly, it’s a wonder that anyone can even type in a search for British food online and come out with anything even remotely resembling a website for British food. I can only assume that either the British government and its media allies are so desperate to protect the national interest, or the websites are in fact run by Brits working in government departments. Who ever was going to complain about foreign food websites when the British government is seemingly in lock step with foreign governments and corporate giants? Well, until now.
I assume that most Food web sites are in the UK, but how long will it be before we see the website of a visiting Liverpudilla shipper include a link to a newspaper report on the BestrimpScallop Caviar? I can’t evenaimlessinarilyate. At the moment the only truly international food website is Leafly.com which includes pictures of the DevonshireranestedriteFish.com. They have also include a beautiful picture of the Saltwatersedge Boiled Salmon. Leafly.com also includes links to blogs and other sites of interest from the UK and beyond.
It would be nice if we could send a little message to improve the search criteria, but it would also be nice if people could send a message to the webmaster with a simple one:
From: Please mailto: Date: vomiting shark is amazing
And if you send this to 20 email addresses: surely they will read it and write back to you. Do you see how the benefits of free speech are making a difference in the world? You are making the planet a better place for everyone? This is the biggest game being played by mankind, isn’t it?
